Blackpool Casino's?

"...Council officials believe that the proposed relaxation of gaming laws in the U.K. could be a powerful catalyst for regeneration but stress that gaming is only one component of their strategy and not required for the regeneration plan to be successful."

GAMBLING LAWS

Culture, Media and Sport Secretary Tessa Jowell has released details of a draft gambling bill which aims to deregulate the £40bn industry. Mrs Jowell said the new law would keep the gambling industry free of crime and protect the young and vulnerable. The full bill will be put forward in April 2004 which will then enter Parliament.

BLACKPOOL TRANSFORMATION

MPs and lords have visited Blackpool to look at the plans, which would see the creation of five hotel casinos along the Golden Mile. Blackpool wants to transform itself into the UK's first casino resort, with the council believing it will lead to a transformation in the town's fortunes.

VOTE OF CONFIDENCE FOR CASINO PLANS

Blackpool Challenge Partnership has given a vote of confidence to Leisure Parcs’ bold plans to transform the resort into the casino capital of Britain.

The partnership of public, private and community organisations expressed its support for the Las Vegas-style vision at its latest board meeting.

Partnership manager Mr Alan Cavill said: “The board has agreed to support the concept, subject to legislative endorsement, as it believes that the plan will be beneficial for Blackpool.

“The aim of the Challenge Partnership is to work towards improving life for the whole of the seaside community – for tourists, industry and local residents. This concept meets with our criteria and is something the whole town can feel optimistic about.”

As part of its endorsement of the plan, BCP has agreed to part-fund a fact-finding mission to Las Vegas and Atlantic City in partnership with the private sector, which will include key players from the tourism industry.

Under Leisure Parcs’ imaginative proposals, Blackpool’s famous Golden Mile would make way for a Golden Triangle of hotels, entertainment venues and a state-of-the-art conference centre.

It is anticipated that the plans – which hinge on the outcome of a Gambling Review – will create up to 25,000 new jobs in Blackpool. By the year 2020, the resort could be attracting 30 million visitors a year, spending £2bn.
